April 2023, Fly The Whale launched scheduled service between St. Croix and St. Thomas, USVI. March 2024, Fly The Whale launched scheduled service between St. Croix and San Juan, Isla Grande Airport. November 2024, Fly The Whale launched scheduled service between Block Island and Westerly, Rhode Island.
As the Assistant Chief Pilot – USVI, you need to possess a variety of skills and abilities to effectively and professionally carry out your duties. Leadership and management capabilities are essential for leading our team of USVI based pilots and coordinating with other departments and stakeholders. Additionally, strong communication and interpersonal skills are necessary for communicating clearly and respectfully with colleagues, passengers, and authorities. Problem-solving and decision-making are also important, as you need to be able to handle complex or challenging situations, such as emergencies, delays, or conflicts, and make sound decisions in a timely manner. Lastly, technical and operational knowledge is required in order to operate the aircraft systems, instruments, and equipment, as well as adhere to standard operating procedures and regulations.
As the Assistant Chief Pilot – USVI, you have many essential responsibilities and duties that require your attention and dedication. These include supervising and overseeing the daily operations of the USVI flight crew members, training and mentoring pilots, ensuring compliance with company policies, safety standards, and regulatory requirements, acting as a liaison between the flight crew and the management, and assisting the Chief Pilot in developing strategic plans. In addition, you must represent the company in external meetings and events as required. All of these tasks are integral to the success of the flight department.
Duties & Responsibilities
- As a company Training Captain and Check Airman, conducts the initial training and checking of new pilots and makes recommendations for hire for USVI based flight crews
- Evaluates the work of USVI based pilots and takes corrective action when necessary. Initiates corrective intervention as necessary
- Serves as an Instructor and Check Airman, and assists the Maintenance department with aircraft operational checks as needed
- Develops and administers individual performance plans for each USVI based pilot
- Monitors USVI based pilot performance, and ensures those pilots meet and maintain department, interagency and FAA Commercial Pilot in Command requirements
- Serves as the USVI Flight Operations safety representative and as an expert in coordination with the company Safety Officer, to ensure that all flight operations are performed safely
- Coordinates with the company Safety Officer regarding entries into the SMS program
- Ensures that USVI based pilots comply with standards found in: Employee Handbook, Training Manual, Operations Manual, company Operations Specifications, and Federal Aviation Regulations
- Reviews, corrects, and submits required paperwork for self and USVI flight crew employees
Operations/Logistics
- Develops and implements USVI pilot schedule, rotations, reliefs, and replacements
Program Development
- Maintains manuals and documentation for USVI flight operations and aircrew training
Duties as Assigned
- Maintains accountability of assigned equipment
- Assist in aviation equipment inspections as required
- Assist with program contracting when assigned. Includes writing solicitations for acquiring new equipment
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Prior/Recent experience managing, training, checking, and/or supervising pilots and aviation operations as an FAA Part 135 Asst. Chief Pilot, Check Airman and/or Chief Pilot, Public Aircraft Operations Instructor Pilot, Asst. Chief Pilot or Chief Pilot, Law Enforcement Instructor, Asst. Chief, or Chief Pilot, or as an U.S. Military Instructor/ Standardization Pilot
- Intermediate computer skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Commercial SEL w/ Instrument Rating, or ATP SEL
- High Performance Endorsement
- 1200 Total Time
- 500 XC (point to point)
- 100 Night
- 75 Instrument
Additional Preferred Experience
- 100 hours PIC in CE-208
- G1000 experience
- Part 135 experience, ideally with Instructor and/or Check Airman responsibilities
- Valid 2nd class medical
- Ability to function collaboratively with peer in a fast paced environment
- Ability to consistently make sound decisions with little direct supervision
- Excellent communication skills both verbal and written

Special Requirements and Conditions of Employment
- A valid unrestricted driver’s license & valid unrestricted US Passport and/or VISA
- About 25% of work is administrative, and 75% is flying
- Travel will be required
Desired Qualifications
- Part 135 Caravan experience as an Instructor and Check Airman
- Previous Aviation Management experience
